Amherst takes over top spot
Last spring Amherst went 32-1, losing to the eventual national champion in overtime. All five starters return.

In fact, all of last year's players return.

The Jeffs were balanced last season, with nobody playing even as many as 28 minutes per game and seven players averaging seven or more points. Amherst received 21 of the 25 first-place votes, with Hope getting three and defending champion Washington U. the remaining top nod.

Making its debut at No. 25 is St. Vincent, in its first season of eligibility for the poll after transition from the NAIA. The Bearcats went 23-5 last season and won the ECAC Southern Region tournament. St. Vincent is also eligible for the NCAA Tournament for the first time.

Repeats aren't unheard of in Division III men's basketball. In fact, UW-Stevens Point has already done it once.

UW-SP back in familiar spot
The top remains the same. But the reshuffling underneath shows many teams with a legitimate chance of knocking off the defending champions and making a trip to Salem for themselves.

UW-Stevens Point is No. 1 in the 2010-11 men's preseason D3hoops.com Top 25, released Thursday morning.

The Pointers, who return four of five starters but lose guard Matt Moses, received 21 of the 25 first-place votes. No. 2 Randolph-Macon, which returns every starter and key contributor from last year's Final Four team, picked up two first-place votes.

Fellow ODAC member Eastern Mennonite is No. 3, after returning five starters from a team that made the Elite 8 last season. Illinois Wesleyan, which lost at UW-Stevens Point in the Elite Eight round, is No. 4 with two first-place votes, while CCIW rival Carthage is No. 5 after returning four starters from a Sweet 16 team.

The women's Top 25 voting process is wrapping up and the poll will be released later this week.
