Jeffs are Lords of D-III
Andrew Olson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, with Tim McLaughlin joining him on the All-Tournament team. Amherst already had the monkey off its back, but added Walnut and Bronze to what was already an outstanding season, writes Pat Coleman in his Final Four wrapup.
"It's wonderful to be national champs," coach Dave Hixon said. "It was special to me when the president of Virginia Wesleyan compliments me on how good our kids are. ...
"Now we have won two games; it is a big deal to get that banner."
Olson finished with 15 points and five assists, while fellow starters Brian Baskauskas (14), Dan Wheeler (13), Tim McLaughlin (12) and pseudo-starter Kevin Hopkins (12) each finished in double figures as well. Olson was named a first team D3hoops.com All-American, with Hixon earning Coach of the Year honors. The full 2006-07 D3hoops.com All-American team, with Guilford's Ben Strong named Player of the Year.
TonTon Balenga scored 19 points for Virginia Wesleyan but was limited to 2-for-7 shooting from 3-point range. Brandon Adair was 7-for-9 from the floor but 3-for-11 from the foul line.
Washington U. won the third-place game, defeating Wooster 92-84 behind 22 points from Tyler Nading and 21 from Sean Wallis.
